Are We Blind?

I've been reading snippets of Simulacra and Simulation again. It's a book I was introduced to in college. If you want to take a real head trip, check it out, because it can make you rethink all sorts of things.

Are Places or People Haunted?

Image copyright Steven Symes
Have you ever experienced a haunting? Just how you would describe such an experience, if you've ever gone through it, would depend on what kind of a haunting it was. Often, we focus on the negative hauntings out there, the ones where people feel scared and depressed, but sometimes hauntings are a positive experience as people feel that a loved one who has passed on is nearby, or that a protective angel is watching over them.

I Finally Made a Halloween Tree and It's Incredible

For years I've planned on doing my own Halloween tree. Why? Because it just seems like a good thing to do, and because I can. But I struggled to find a suitable tree. So many that are sold in the stores just weren't what I was looking for, and so I went without.

What Are Shadow People?

Since essentially the dawn of civilization and the written word, encounters with shadow people have been recorded. They have been described as literally consisting only of shadow, even manifesting in dark rooms where there is little light to cast such shadows. And unlike a regular shadow, shadow people do not stretch across the ground and project onto flat surfaces, but seem to be three-dimensional like other beings.

USOs: the Mysteries of the Ocean

Everyone has heard of UFOs, or unidentified flying objects. Interestingly enough, the term that originally applied to any flying object in the sky that the observer was unable to identify, but subsequently has been used as a term for a supposedly extraterrestrial craft seen flying over Earth. Most people have never heard of the term USO, so the point of this post is to raise your awareness on the topic.

Corrections and The Edge of Tomorrow

This post is a combination of some thoughts on writing as well as some of my thoughts on The Edge of Tomorrow, which I saw on Thursday night. So without any further delay, on to my thoughts about writing.

Complex Feelings on the Paranormal

"The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function." F. Scott Fitzgerald

I constantly feel like I have my feet in two different worlds, and sometimes it gets pretty interesting. I am well-versed in the ways and methodologies of science, although I'm far from a scientist. My formal science education includes too many courses to even remember, all the way through the graduate level. I've been taught everything from diagramming cell structures to various theories in physics and advanced statistical analysis techniques. In my science-based education, I've been taught by people who have firmly believed science has answers for everything, as well as those who recognize its acute limits.

Christian Witches

El Curandero, by Antonio Coche Mendoza
The term "witchcraft" can be a slippery one. At the risk of being burned at the stake, I admit that I personally have studied witchcraft fairly extensively, and so have a level of expertise on the subject that most members of the public do not. I've known witches personally as well, and so I am here to tell you that there is such a thing as Christian witches, or people who practice witchcraft yet still believe in the Bible and view Jesus as their savior.

The Occult

Occult is a word we hear all the time, but most people probably don't really know what it means. Like many words, the word can mean different things to different people, meaning the definition can shift considerably. For the purpose of this post, the many aspect of the occult will be briefly explored.

Nosferatu

For centuries vampires have fascinated humans, although the reasons why seem to morph over time, just like any legend. The term Nosferatu is not used much today to refer to the undead. Scholars today theorize that it is an old Romanian word that was used to refer to vampires, although some linguists believe it was used to refer to all unclean spirits or even the devil himself. Whichever is the case, the word was brought into popular usage by Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Mediums

Some people believe that communication with the dead is possible. Perhaps you have lost a loved one and just want to have that final closure. Some contact the dead to learn about past events that happened in a building or on a piece of land, oftentimes in a quest to understand why the area is haunted. There are, of course, those who seek to contact the dead for recreational purposes.

La Llorona

Longtime followers of my blog know that I grew up in New Mexico. The area is rich in culture, including a number of legends that are passed on from generation to generation. One of those legends I grew up hearing about was La Llorona, which in Spanish loosely means "the crying woman." Stories about her would scare the hell out of me as a kid, which had its intended effect.

Ghost Knocking

Have you ever heard knocking in the night, only to get up and check the house and find nobody is at the door? Did the knocking cease or did it continue, traveling through the house until it sounded on your bedroom walls?

Blogging From A to Z Day 10: J is for Jewelry

For the month of April I will be participating in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge. Learn more about the challenge by clicking here. Each day (except Sundays) I will be posting a theme based on each letter of the alphabet. This blog is covering paranormal topics for the month. When most people think about the paranormal, one of the last things on their mind is jewelry. But when you think about it, jewelry is an item that is incredibly close to you, in many ways closer than your clothing. Many people wear their jewelry against their skin, and the choose designs that have deep personal meaning (just ask any woman about her wedding ring, if you don't believe me). People who adhered to different paranormal philosophies are no different. Like Christians who wear a crucifix, people of different belief systems wear special jewelry for a variety of reasons.

Blogging From A to Z Day 9: I is for Incubus

There are also succubus, which flip flops the sexes

Everyone has heard the term incubus (and if you haven't, now's not the time to admit it and be embarrassed in front of the group. Kidding. Not kidding). The term is thrown around all of the time. There is even a band named Incubus, one that I happen to really like. In any case, like so many paranormal terms, your average person really doesn't understand the word but is too scared to ask.

Who doesn't know what a horoscope is? They are always around us. I don't know if I've ever seen a newspaper without one. They are pervasive online as well. Don't believe me? Google "horoscope" and you'll see, or look on the app store for your phone.

Blogging From A to Z Day 7: G is for Ghost Lights

For the month of April I will be participating in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge. Learn more about the challenge by clicking here. Each day (except Sundays) I will be posting a theme based on each letter of the alphabet. This blog is covering paranormal topics for the month. As with many paranormal terms, there are many meanings for the term "ghost light." Some people argue that ghost lights are only the traditional European variety, while others (especially Americans) say they are something else. The popularity of ghost lights has waned in recent years, and I have a theory about why.

Blogging From A to Z Day 6: F is for Familiars

For the month of April I will be participating in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge. Learn more about the challenge by clicking here. Each day (except Sundays) I will be posting a theme based on each letter of the alphabet. This blog is covering paranormal topics for the month. To read my automotive blog posts for the challenge, click here.

Familiars or familiar spirits are a type of spiritual guide that witches or cunning folk keep around. These guides actually help or assist with the practice of magic. Most often, familiars are portrayed as animals, but sometimes they can appear as human or a humanoid. Some believe that the familiars possess the body of an animal, while others believe they merely take on the look of a particular animal.

This topic really doesn't need an introduction since everyone these days seems to be well-verse in the basics of what constitutes an extraterrestrial. So instead of boring everyone, I'll just jump right into the meat of the topic.

Blogging From A to Z Challenge Day 4: D is for Demonology

For the month of April I will be participating in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge. Learn more about the challenge by clicking here. Each day (except Sundays) I will be posting a theme based on each letter of the alphabet. This blog is covering paranormal topics for the month. To read my automotive blog posts for the challenge, click here.

Demonology is a complex field of study that crosses into many different disciplines, namely theology and occultism. I have read several books on the subject and bumped into the field of study in many other works, but I have to admit that it is so incredibly complicated I don't entirely get it. Maybe this is why there are demonologists who dedicate their entire lives to the study of the subject.

Blogging From A to Z Day 3: C is for Clairsentience

Clairsentience is one of the three big categories when it comes to psychic intuition. Pretty much everyone has heard of clairvoyance, or the ability to see things that are beyond the eyes' ability to see, including future events. Clairsentience is somewhat similar, yet different, so read on to learn more about this psychic gift.

We use the term "black magic" all the time, but do we really know what it means? Like many terms, it can take on a number of meanings, depending on who is using the term. Since I study the occult and the paranormal at large, I have my own set of criteria for what I consider to be black magic.

Blogging From A to Z Day One: A is for Amityville Haunting

For the month of April I will be participating in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge. Learn more about the challenge by clicking here. Each day (except Sundays) I will be posting a theme based on each letter of the alphabet. This blog is covering paranormal topics for the month. To read my automotive blog posts for the challenge, click here.

Just about everyone has heard of the Amityville Haunting. It was a story that captivated the nation at the time (or so I've heard, since I wasn't alive back then). There were several elements that made the haunting particularly phenomenal: the horrific way the previous owners of the house were murdered (by their own son/brother), the media frenzy that surrounded The Exorcist (which was released the previous year), and the televised investigation of the house (which to my knowledge had never been done before). Even today the story generates quite a bit of interest, making it one of the most famous hauntings in history.

Who Believes in the Paranormal?

This will be my last blog post before diving into the A to Z Challenge. In case you missed the announcement last Friday, for this April my theme will be the paranormal, again. I know that surprises no one since it's kind of my thing in my fiction writing. I also have written about the paranormal quite a bit in the nonfiction sense, which has required me to gather primary resource information for my articles, blog posts, etc. In other words, I've spoken with quite a few people who claim to have experienced paranormal phenomena.

The Power of Belief

"The wish not to believe can influence as strongly as the wish to believe."
Dr. Ian Stevenson

This past week I ran across a story from The Atlantic about the paranormal activity lab that operates at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine. You can read the story (which is a longer and more in-depth feature piece) by clicking here. This certainly isn't the first time that I've read about academics who study the possibility that (shocker) modern science might not have all of the answers to life and the many unexplained events that have occurred, even in modern times.

My Haunted High School

I think I'm naturally a skeptic when it comes to people's claims about the paranormal. This might come as a surprise to most, but part of the reason has to do with certain individuals who want to ascribe any unusual event to ghosts, aliens, or Bigfoot. It was with this attitude that I did not immediately believe stories that my high school was haunted.

American Horror Story: Asylum - My Review

Have you caught the second season of American Horror Story yet? It's on Netflix, so if you have a subscription you can watch it that way. I was almost about to just buy the season DVDs when it released, but I might end up doing that or purchasing the digital version of the third season so I'm not waiting so long to catch up.
